- Russian has killed Ukrainians and taken Ukrainian territory through military force
- Russia desires to eliminate Ukraine as a nation, its people, and its culture
- It seeks to control the territory
- Russia has a scorched earth approach which totally destroys a city reducing it to nothing but rubble through artillery, guided bombs, drones and missiles in order to “occupy” or take control of it
- Russia has committed a huge number of war crimes
- Ukraine is simply trying to defend its life and liberty
Key Facts
- It is often called the Russo-Ukrainian War
- Russia invaded Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula on February 27, 2014
- Russia seized Ukrainian territory in the eastern Donbas in April 2014
- In the eastern Donbas region, specifically the Donetsk and Luhansk area, the conflict killed over 14,000 people between 2014 and 2022
- Russia escalated the war into a full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022
- Since 2022 the conflict is considered the largest military conflict in Europe since World War 2.
- As of March 2026 it is estimated that Russia has committed over 213,000 war crimes against Ukraine and its people
- The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimates as of June 2026 that 400,000–450,000 Russian soldiers have been killed
- The CSIS June 2026 estimate for Ukrainian military deaths is between 125,000 and 150,000
- As of July 2026 the United Nations has verified at least 16,874 civilian deaths in Ukraine (the true number is likely much higher)
- These numbers would make this the deadliest conflict in Europe since World War 2
